With tears in her eyes, Norwegian skier Ragnhild Mowinckel (31) announced on social media on Monday that she will retire at the end of the season – the announcement made someone in Liechtenstein especially happy.

Ex-ski professional and SRF expert Tina Weirather (34) has been good friends with Mowinckel for years. The Liechtensteiner tells Blick: “I am convinced that she has found a good time to resign. I have the feeling that she is ready for a new phase in her life. Only you know when the time really comes. But from our conversations, I really feel like she’s now in the same place I was before I quit.”

After 14 years it’s over: Mowinckel tearfully declares her resignation(01:24)

The two still have many conversations. Mowinckel regularly lives in Vaduz near Weirather during the season to save travel time between races. The Norwegian once told Blick about her Central European neighborhoods in the principality: “I feel like part of the family, it’s my second home.”

Fajitas and sushi evenings in the Ländle

Mowinckel regularly stayed overnight in Vaduz, even after Weirather’s resignation. The SRF expert becomes a little wistful at the thought that her friend will soon no longer need a place to spend the night in the countryside. «Her visits were always pleasant, she also often cooked. It was mostly fajitas. But we also enjoyed eating sushi,” says Weirather.

Now, three years after the Liechtensteiner, Mowinckel is also retiring. With two silver medals from the Olympic Games, two bronze World Cup medals and four World Cup victories. The last will be in Cortina at the end of January – it will be her first downhill triumph. “So she has victories in three disciplines. I really appreciate that she can now stop this high, because the season has not gone well for her so far,” says Weirather, who will not attend her friend’s last races because she is on maternity leave. “I hope that she can end the season strong and with a good feeling. And of course healthy!”

Now joint trips are getting closer

Because anyone who is as close to each other as the two ski women suffers greatly, even if injured. Weirather: “Since her injury in Soldeu 2018, her knee has been pretty bad. But how she only then experienced the best part of her career was sensational.”

The Liechtenstein native is confident their friendship will last. “We now have more time for all the things we wanted to do,” she hopes. She is invited to Mowinckel’s wedding in September. Joint trips, for example to Japan or Lake Garda, are getting closer with the resignation.
