“A negligent program”: Slalom star Feller skips the Aspen giant slalom

Next weekend the men’s ski team will go to Aspen (USA), the third to last stop this winter. There are two giant slaloms and one slalom. After that, only the races will take place in Kranjska Gora (Slo) and Saalbach (Austria). So the ski season is coming to an end. And some drivers also seem to be slowly but surely running out of power.

Manuel Feller (31), who “only” participates in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines in the Ski World Cup, skips one of the three Aspen races. He will skip the giant slalom on Saturday, he said in an interview on ORF and at the same time criticized the FIS: “The program with the three races is almost a bit remiss for someone who competes in two disciplines, I must say.”

The chance of injuries is too great for the 31-year-old and the recovery time between races is too short: “The chance is simply too great that something will happen. So on Friday I’ll go skiing, on Saturday I’ll take a break and on Sunday I’ll do a good slalom.”

Veller close to greatest career success

Would Feller have abandoned the giant slalom on Saturday if he still had a chance to win the discipline? The 31-year-old is in seventh place in the giant – almost 500 points behind our skier Marco Odermatt (26). The chances of winning this ranking are long gone.

Different in slalom. The man with the wild driving style wants to use all his strength for this. Feller could – with three races to go – win the small crystal ball this weekend. It would be the first of his career and, after silver at the 2017 World Cup, the biggest victory for the long-unfinished man. (par)
