The League Cup often receives little attention because it is only the third most important competition in English football – after the FA Cup and the Premier League. But this time it’s different. Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp (56) describes the title as “the most special trophy” he has won in his twenty years as a coach.
Klopp is in the center of the media after the 1-0 final victory in extra time against Chelsea. Exactly a month ago, Klopp announced his departure at the end of the season after more than eight years at Liverpool. He leaves as an absolute club legend. The German led the Northern England team to their first Champions League title in 15 years in 2019. A year later the first championship in 30 years followed. In total, the Reds won eight titles under Klopp.
Are there any more titles this season? Liverpool is currently the leader in the Premier League and also participates in the FA Cup and Europa League. But Klopp won’t even discuss whether Sunday’s League Cup was his last trophy with Liverpool. “I don’t care what my background is. I’m not here to create one. As a coach you are there to do your job.”
He is already immortal in Liverpool. On Sunday against Chelsea he proved again why he is one of the best coaches in the world. Due to many injuries, Klopp brought players from his own youth to the final. The youngest, Jayden Danns (18), previously played only one minute for the pros. When the winning goal was scored in the 118th minute, the average Liverpool team was under 22 years old. “It was absolutely extraordinary! I was proud of our academy, I was proud of our coaches, I was proud of so many things. It was really overwhelming!” said Klopp after the match. “Youth players play against an absolute top team and you still win. I have never heard a story like that.”
