During the first weekend of the World Championships in Altenberg, the Swiss bobsledders remained far from the medals. In the men’s two-man bobsleigh, the Friedli/Haas duo achieved the best result from a Swiss perspective with 10th place. The gap with the leaders is more than three seconds after four runs. Cédric Follador/Luca Rolli (11th) and Timo Rohner/Gregory Jones (12th) follow a few tenths.
All medals go to the host. The winner is two-time Olympic champion Francesco Friedrich, who won his eighth world title in the two-man bobsleigh. With pusher Alexander Schüller, 33-year-old Friedrich remains 0.34 seconds ahead of the duo Adam Ammour/Issam Ammour. The bronze goes to defending champion Johannes Lochner/Georg Fleischhauer.
Melanie Hasler placed 11th in the monobob competition. This means that the 25-year-old cannot improve on Saturday’s first two runs. Meanwhile, Debora Annen, who is four years younger, also showed a good performance on the second day, moving up one place compared to Saturday and finishing thirteenth on her World Cup debut.
The victory goes to Laura Nolte. The 25-year-old German raced from fourth place to first place with the best time in the third run. Her start was only decided a few minutes in advance after she complained of problems with her adductor muscles on Saturday. Last year she won in St. Moritz and was crowned the first German monobob world champion.
Behind Nolte, 39-year-old American Elana Meyers Taylor won her ninth World Championship medal with silver. Lisa Buckwitz from Germany, who was ahead at halftime, had to settle for bronze. (SDA)
