That was a ‘no-go’ for him: Odermatt escapes the Kristoffersen scenario

Until Saturday evening, Marco Odermatt did not have the best memories of Palisades Tahoe (USA). Last year, weakened by a severe flu, he suffered his final ‘defeat’ in the giant slalom in the California winter sports resort where the 1960 Olympics were held. Marco Schwarz (Ö) relegated Odermatt to first place.

Although Black’s World Cup season ended in December due to a torn cruciate ligament in Bormio, the Ösis are also extremely combative in the new edition of the giant derby in Palisades (old name Squaw Valley). “We want to irritate Odermatt a bit,” Stefan Brennsteiner announced before the start. But halfway through the race it is again the ÖSV athletes who are annoyed by their enormous lead over Central Switzerland: Slalom World Cup leader Manuel Feller is 1.79 seconds behind, Brennsteiner gains more than two seconds and drops out of the Final.

Only one can survive

The only one who can keep up with Odermatt in the first act is Henrik Kristoffersen (no. 29). The 2019 giant world champion, who only missed the podium in the six previous giant slaloms, mainly due to glaring problems with equipment coordination, is only 15 hundredths behind for the decision.

This match is particularly explosive because the three-time Swiss athlete of the year has never made it a secret in recent years that Kristoffersen is not one of his best colleagues. “Second place behind Henrik is a no-go for me,” Odermatt said prior to the World Championships in Courchevel.

The Swiss team shines

But the 26-year-old is spared this scenario in Palisades – although Kristoffersen sets a great time in the second run (1.25 seconds ahead of third River Radamus), Odermatt saves 12 hundredths of a second to the finish and celebrates his 10th massive victory in a row – his 35th World Cup victory. This means that the athlete of the century is now mathematically certain to win the overall World Cup.

Odermatt’s teammates Thomas Tumler, Gino Caviezel and Loïc Meillard also have reason to be happy, with places 4 to 6.
