Valtteri Bottas (34) was able to put himself in the spotlight at Williams for four years. In 2016, the gates of heaven at Mercedes opened for him with the immediate dismissal of Rosberg. There he dreamed of the world title for five years, until he finally realized that Hamilton was better. Now the Finn enters his third year at Sauber with 10 wins and 20 pole positions. Once again with all the freedom that he was not allowed to enjoy at Mercedes.
Blick: After 222 Formula 1 races so far, let’s talk about your goals.
Valtteri Bottas: I want to experience a better year than 2023 with the whole team. It would be a good step. And of course, I clearly want to beat my teammate Zhou.
A rather modest goal for a driver on whom Sauber fans are pinning all their hopes. And how do you imagine your future? Your contract expires at the end of this year.
After Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari was announced surprisingly early, the driver market will move very quickly. As a driver you always wish you knew your future after a few races.
An old problem of yours. And what is your wish?
I would like to stay in Hinwil and be in the Audi in 2026. It’s great when you can witness the birth of a new team. But the market certainly offers other possibilities. Management is working on my future.
How satisfied are you with the tests?
What surprised me most was the stability in the fast corners. We have been having problems in this relationship for two years. In addition, air resistance has decreased. We have also improved there.
So away from 9th place at the World Cup?
I see more people and a lot of movement throughout the factory. Let us surprise you. In any case, we now have more options when it comes to further development. The base has become stronger.
Will the C44 be a better car than the C43?
Certainly. Everything immediately feels right in the cockpit. There’s nothing fundamentally bad about the new car.
Okay – what next?
I think we have a clear plan. We are now looking for the optimal ground clearance. This should improve our performance. But first we need to learn how far we can increase the ground clearance and suspension stiffness. And we haven’t found the right balance yet.
Finally: Your tip for the World Cup?
(Laughs.) Max Verstappen.
