Football mourns Artur Jorge. As reported by the Portuguese media, the former Nati coach died at the age of 78 after a long illness, surrounded by his immediate family.
In March 1996, the Portuguese followed Roy Hodgson, who moved to Inter Milan after successfully qualifying for the European Championship tournament in England in the summer of 1996.
Above all, Jorge is remembered by the Swiss football nation for his decision not to field the two established Nati stars Adrian Knup and Alain Sutter for the European Championship. Jorge caused a real storm of outrage. The Blick headline at the time was legendary: “Now he’s crazy!”, which is still anchored in the collective Swiss sports memory today.
