Nagelsmann’s record is much better: that’s how much Bayern gambled away with Tuchel

Three defeats in a row are not possible on the Säbener Strasse: Thomas Tuchel will no longer be Bayern’s coach from the summer. The Munich club announced this on Wednesday morning. The fact that the misunderstanding was not immediately resolved is probably due to the fact that there are no suitable candidates available.

The irony of history: Because Tuchel was seen as the ideal candidate a year ago, predecessor Julian Nagelsmann had to go headlong. It can now be said that the Bayern bosses gambled badly with this poker game. Nagelsmann’s record is superior to that of his successor.

Nagelsmann left with triple chances

Flashback: Julian Nagelsmann was fired eleven months ago. A 1-2 defeat away to Bayer Leverkusen was famously too much. Shortly before the direct duel with BVB, Bayern lost the lead in the Bundesliga table – and the bosses lost their nerve. Knowing that Thomas Tuchel, a German world coach, was on the market, they threw Nagelsmann out despite his perfect record.

Because when Nagelsmann was released on March 19, 2023, Bayern had every chance to win the triple: Paris SG were eliminated in the round of 16 of the Champions League with an aggregate score of 3-0. Bayern were in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup and were only one point behind Dortmund in the championship. Believing that Tuchel could end the season better and even use the starting position to win a treble, the Bayern bosses took the risk.

Bayern won the top match against Dortmund, but said goodbye to the DFB Cup and Champions League within a few weeks. They became champions because BVB lost their nerve on the last match day. Despite the championship title, this inglorious spectacle cost the Bayern leading duo Kahn-Salihamidzic their jobs. Tuchel was allowed to continue, despite a weaker balance sheet than his predecessor.

Tuchel is only better in one statistic

The bare figures clearly speak against the (still) Bayern coach. Nagelsmann had a points average of 2.31 in 84 games. Tuchel has 2.02 in 44 games. Despite playing forty fewer games in charge, Bayern have already suffered eleven defeats under Tuchel’s leadership. Under Nagelsmann there were ten in total.

Only the current points in the Bundesliga speak for Tuchel in the Nagelsmann comparison: Bayern has 50 points after 22 games. After 25 match days, that is only two fewer than last year. Tuchel’s misfortune is that Leverkusen, a strong competitor in the Bundesliga, lost this year. That does not alter the fact that Bayern gambled away its promise eleven months ago.
