Delia Durrer is working on a breakthrough: how our greatest speed gem was thrown off the track

Delia Durrer has a consistent season, but the speed talent did not reach the top 10.

She is the greatest Swiss hope for speed, but does not really get going: Delia Durrer. “Many races were neither great nor flops. At least I have a consistency that is very important to me,” she says. And she’s right: she scored points in 10 of the 13 races, but Durrer never got better than 15th.

«Overall, I am satisfied. But it is true that in many races I have not been able to fulfill my potential.” In fact, Durrer can do much more than she showed this winter. Why isn’t this reflected in the rankings?

Durrer suffered his first blow last fall when it was announced that Lake Louise (Ka) would no longer appear on the World Cup calendar. The slope in the Rocky Mountains is perfect for her: the speed is always high and there are many long turns – Durrer’s courage and her gliding skills come into their own here. “Of course, I really enjoyed riding in Lake Louise. At the same time I have to adapt, the other routes are cool too,” she says.

Fall and knee pain

Despite this, Durrer started the season well. Places 21 and 19 in St. Moritz GR, plus 15th place in Val d’Isère (Fr) – that was very good. But then came the Super-G in the Savoyard Alps. Durrer flew away violently. “I had pain in my knee for a while afterwards – it was hard on my head,” she admits. She didn’t miss any races, but the fall was still a setback.

The third problem followed at the chaos races in Cortina (It). Durrer got through safely, but the serious injuries of her teammates Corinne Suter (29) and Joana Hählen (31) hindered her. «Not during the weekend. But then it got tough.” When junior downhill world champion Malorie Blanc (20) tore her cruciate ligament during the European Cup in Crans-Montana USA, it was too much. “That was close to me,” Durrer admits.

Technically, Durrer still has a lot to do

But it is also a fact: Technically speaking, Durrer is not yet one of the best – she knows that. «In Crans-Montana we saw that their technical development had come to a standstill. There was no progress this winter,” says Hans Flatscher. The Swiss Alpine director is not worried: “The most important thing is that Delia stays healthy. I am confident that we will have a lot of fun with her in the future.”

Maybe next weekend in Val di Fassa (It). Durrer took part in her first World Cup competition there three years ago.
