Carlos Alcaraz’s ankle is being treated.

For the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro is over after the first round. The number 2 in the world had to abandon his match against the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (ATP 117) after ten minutes due to an injury, while the score was 1:1. This after he twisted his right foot in the first game.

“I spoke to the physiotherapist on the field and we decided together that I would continue playing to see if it gets better,” Alcaraz said after retiring after two games. “That wasn’t the case, so we preferred to be cautious and withdraw.” Research on Wednesday should provide clarity.

Two years ago, the 20-year-old won South America’s most important tournament. Last week, Alcaraz failed in the semi-final against the Chilean Nicolas Jarry (ATP 21) in Buenos Aires.

Wawrinka misses too many chances

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 67) loses in the starting round to the Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta (ATP 59) 5:7, 4:6. De Romand is off to an excellent start in the match, which was postponed due to rain, and has already taken the first service game from his opponent, who won the clay tournament in Buenos Aires a week ago. Only when Wawrinka serves to win the set at 5:4 does he show his nerves. After two pauses, his counterpart, fifteen years younger, gets the first contact.

In the second set, the Argentinian took two service games from the French-speaking Swiss from the start. Wawrinka fights back and gets three chances to equalize the score at 3:4. However, the 38-year-old cannot take advantage of any of these break opportunities and so Diaz Acosta uses his second match point after almost two hours. (SDA/bir)
