The anger in Hong Kong is still not over, now Lionel Messi (36) is trying to smooth things over. In a video message to his Chinese fans, the Argentine football world champion justifies skipping the show match against Inter Miami two weeks ago. His decision against deployment had “no political reasons,” Messi said on Chinese social media platform Weibo.
“If that had been the case, I would not have traveled to China, as I have done so many times during my career,” the Argentinian said, emphasizing his “very close and special relationship with China.” His thigh injury, ‘an inflammation in the adductor muscles’, was the only reason for the fracture. Everyone knows he wants to play “always and in every match,” Messi said.
Nearly 40,000 spectators in the sold-out stadium in Hong Kong had hoped in vain to see the superstar play. Messi withdrew from the match against a local selection, causing a political issue. Even Hong Kong Sports Minister Kevin Yeung intervened and referred to contractual agreements. During his US team’s promotional tour, Messi recently made brief appearances in Saudi Arabia and then Japan.
On Thursday evening, Messi will start his first full season in the American league with Miami against Real Salt Lake. Last year, the eight-time world footballer moved from Paris St. Germain to the MLS. However, some injuries slowed him down and Inter missed the play-offs. Ahead of this season, Miami prepared with a world tour that also took Messi to El Salvador and his homeland to Newell’s Old Boys. (AFP)
