Despite the flu epidemic and the U21 selection: FCL-Frick is not looking for excuses

The Zurich clubs are currently angry with Lucerne. After the unnecessary defeat in Winterthur, there was also an annoying defeat against FCZ. If there is not at least a draw against the rankings next Saturday in Letzigrund, the Zurich trilogy is in danger of ending with zero points.

A serious flu wave is ravaging the FCL

At least the Hoppers are something like Lucerne’s favorite opponents. In the last 18 matches there was one defeat (0-2, on May 13, 2022). But no matter how good the statistics look against GC, they don’t win games. You win with different players. And these were missing on Sunday against FCZ.

“No alibi for defeat”

Four regular players from Lucerne were missing against the completely new team from Zurich. Three of them due to flu: Max Meyer (28), Pius Dorn (27) and one between the two strikers Adrian Grbic (27) and Kemal Ademi (28). “That should not be an alibi for defeat. Everyone who played against FCZ tried everything and excelled,” said Frick.

Yet the Liechtensteiner emphasizes that there was an improved U21 on the field in the final minutes. And he is not wrong about that. In the last ten minutes, Lucerne’s average age was 23.1 years. At FCZ it was 25.5 years. And Pascal Loretz (20), Dario Ulrich (25), Luca Jaquez (20), Mauricio Willimann (20), Ardon Jashari (21), Nicolas Haas (28), Levin Winkler (20) and Lars Villiger (20) were in in the final minutes there were eight or, thanks to Winkler, seven and a half homegrown Lucerne players on the field.

Frick remains positive

For a long time it seemed that they would eventually take one point. But the oldest field player, Antonio Marchesano (33), had something against him in the last minute of the match. Logically, the frustration of the Lucerne people runs deep. However, there are still positives. “Winterthur has come one point closer. But other than that, not much has changed at the table,” says Frick, who, as is often the case, sees the glass as half full.

That is why it is now even more important to get back on track quickly. Frick has no doubt that the flu will also affect the FCL against GC: “Next weekend I am convinced that we will have everyone back.”
