Star director directs: Federer’s last days as a tennis professional immortalized in documentary

Tennis fans can help themselves to popcorn – and maybe a few tissues too. As Amazon Prime announces, the retirement of Roger Federer (42) will be immortalized in a feature-length documentary.

A camera team accompanied Federer for twelve days during his tearful farewell from the grand tennis stage of the 2022 Laver Cup. Initially intended as a home video that Federer could later enjoy with family and friends, it is now being rolled out on a large scale with Prime Video as a partner , the bidder from Basel tells the ‘Bloomberg’ platform.

The fans can look forward to insights that Federer rarely allowed during his career. He gave the filmmakers access to his hotel – Ms Mirka also gives an interview in the documentary for the first time in ten years. In addition, old companions and competitors such as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will speak.

Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia co-directed the film with Joe Sabia. According to Federer’s statement, they have created a “very personal film” that shows another level of the tennis tour. “Yes, there is rivalry here, but off the field there is friendship and respect.”

The plan is for the documentary to appear on Prime Video shortly before the 2024 edition of Wimbledon.
