Tragedy shortly before the wedding: extreme skier dies in an avalanche accident

Exploring the snowy mountains on skis was her passion, and now she paid for it with her life. American extreme skier Catherine “Kasha” Rigby died in an avalanche accident in Brezovica, Kosovo on February 13. She was only 54 years old.

Rigby was considered one of the best telemark and extreme skiers in the world and competed in numerous competitions. A pioneer in her sport, she repeatedly conquered mountains that no one before her had conquered. She is one of only three Americans to have skied an 8,000-meter peak in the Himalayas.

“I’m devastated”

Before her death, she was traveling with her partner Magnus Wolfe Murray. The two were exploring previously unknown slopes in Kosovo’s ski resort before the accident occurred. As “Ski” Magazine reports, the two were off-piste in poor weather conditions when Rigby fell and caused the avalanche. It wasn’t big, but it pushed the skier into a tree. She suffered serious internal injuries, especially her lungs. Although her partner was there immediately and tried to revive her, he was unable to save her. She succumbed to her serious injuries within a very short time.

It is also Magnus Wolfe Murray who confirmed Rigby’s death to the AP news agency. Particularly sad: the two were engaged and the wedding date had already been set. “We wanted to get married in September,” Murray says. “I’m devastated.” Instead of planning the wedding, he now has to deal with the loss of his fiancée.
