“I’ve never seen anything like this”: The Czech Republic surprises the ski world with acrobatic performances

Jan Zabystra (26) jumps from the starting box with starting number 52. The Czech, who has scored once in the Super-G in the World Cup so far (January 2023 in Cortina d’Ampezzo (It) in 19th place), amazes the ski world with an acrobatic performance.

“That does not exist”

After about 25 seconds of riding he goes too fast when he hits a wave. Without being able to brake, Zabystra slides down the Olympiabakken. He only slows down when he lands in the snow right in front of the safety nets. Luckily he doesn’t end up here. Instead, he shows off his agility. Because with a backflip he gets back on his feet – with his skis on his feet, of course.

“I’ve never seen anything like this with the long bars,” says Hans Knauss (53), who will work as co-commentator at ORF during the race. The Austrian, who once won Olympic silver (1998) and World Cup bronze (1999) in the Super-G, wonders how that works. After all, the skis are 2.15 m long. “That’s a talent for movement,” he laughs. “That does not exist!”

He politely declines the request to copy the attachment. “I’d rather not try that.” And Zabystran? Apparently he didn’t hurt himself. After his backflip, he not only gets back on his skis, but he also immediately starts picking up his poles that he lost during the fall. (beer)
