It is known in the bobsleigh world that Simon Friedli (32) does not get upset easily. But in Altenberg he shows how much the man from Solothurn can keep a cool head. Friedli races sensationally to the podium in the four-man bobsleigh race. Friedli and his team were able to ignore the serious fall of their Swiss colleagues in training and deliver a top race.

Third place is Friedli’s first top-3 position as a pilot in his career. And it is the first Swiss podium in the big sled all winter.

Friedli’s coup succeeds on the dangerous circuit, where just five days earlier Swiss pusher Sandro Michel (27) was seriously injured when he fell into the foursome driven by pilot Michael Vogt (25) during training. Moreover, Friedli became ill in the middle of the week and had to stay in bed.

Friedli beats German podium candidate

On Sunday, together with his pushers Pascal Moser (27), Luca Rolli (27) and Dominik Schläpfer (29), he made the Swiss, who were severely tested this week, cheer on the track again. The joy is liberating, also because Sandro Michel is still on the right track at the University Hospital in Dresden.

Of course: Friedli also benefits from the absence of the team of Vogt and Johannes Lochner, who fell during training, and the strong British around Brad Hall also decided not to participate out of solidarity with the fall victims. But Friedli beats strong local hero Adam Ammour (22) in the stage fight. The victory was shared by Francesco Friedrich (De, 33) and Emils Cipulis (Let, 28).

How dangerous the track is becomes clear once again: a Canadian and a Czech team fall violently, but according to the first information the occupants escape lightly.
