Two years ago, Crans-Montana USA was awarded the 2027 World Ski Championships. Just as the World Cup takes place in Valais, the FIS is now threatening to withdraw the World Cup again. The reason: no contract has been signed yet – this usually happens within a few months of the commitment.

The dispute concerns, among other things, deficit guarantees demanded by the FIS, but which have not yet been guaranteed by Swiss-Ski, the canton of Valais and the affected communities. But it can also be about power games. Because it is known that FIS president Johan Eliasch (62) and Swiss ski boss Urs Lehmann (54) are not on the same page on various points.

“A misunderstanding”

Lehmann has now responded to the dispute. At RTS he says: “It is a misunderstanding.” They had positive discussions on Friday and were surprised by what was later published on the World Ski Association homepage.

Diego Zuger, co-CEO of Swiss-Ski, has said the same in recent days. “We formally reject the accusation that we have not kept promises made during the candidacy phase,” he stressed. On the contrary, Zuger told the “NZZ”, it was the FIS that “changed the terms during the negotiations”.

Further consultation on Monday

Lehmann reveals what happens next. Further discussions are scheduled for Monday. It remains to be seen if this will solve the problem. The Swiss ski president hopes that the matter will be cleared up.

When asked if he had a problem with Eliasch, Lehmann gave a clear answer: “I have no problem with him.” However, he could not say what it would look like differently. “You should ask Elias that.”
