The Swiss ski jumpers only played a supporting role in Noriaki Kasai’s return to the World Cup in Japan. Killian Peier took 29th place as Swiss-Ski’s best athlete in the first of two competitions in Sapporo. 42-year-old Simon Ammann, who became world champion on this hill in 2007, and Gregor Deschwanden missed qualifying for the second round with places 40 and 41 respectively. For Deschwanden, who stood on the podium two weeks earlier in Willingen, it was only the second time this season that he could not finish in the top thirty.
Local hero Noriaki Kasai did better, taking part in his 570th World Cup competition at the age of 51 (!) after a four-year break and even achieving a World Cup point in 30th place. The Japanese spectators could almost have been happy with a home win. But Ryoyu Kobayashi, who led at half-time, was pushed into second place by Austrian Stefan Kraft by a paltry 0.4 points. With his ninth World Cup victory this season, Kraft further extended his lead at the World Cup. (SDA)
