“The show must go on”, is the motto at the ice canal in Altenberg (D). The first races of the World Cup weekend will take place on Friday with the skeleton races. The bobsleigh athletes have a rest day. But many of them are gathering for a crisis meeting because of Tuesday’s bobsleigh tragedy, when Swiss pusher Sandro Michel (27) was seriously injured in a horror accident.

They want to collect ideas and pass them on to the world association IBSF on how safety in this dangerous sport can be improved.

No head or back injuries for Michel

Meanwhile, Michel remains in the intensive care unit of the University Hospital in Dresden and his condition is stable. Swiss Sliding will provide new details on the severity of his injuries on Friday. Michel underwent a second operation on Thursday on the hip area, which left him seriously injured in the devastating collision with the overturned bobsled. The man from Aargau also suffered serious injuries to his chest.

However, we can breathe a sigh of relief with the news that Michel escaped without head and spine injuries. It responds quickly and is now so stable that the time for transport back to Switzerland with Rega is being evaluated.

Given the significant injury report, it is clear that Michel’s priority is a return to a normal life – and not a possible return to the ice rink.

Pilot Michael Vogt back in Switzerland

Pilot Michael Vogt (26), who suffered a severe concussion in the crash, as well as the slightly injured pushers Andreas Haas (27) and Dominik Hufschmid (25) have now returned to Switzerland. A Vogt start at the World Cup in Winterberg (D) at the end of the month is completely open.

This weekend, however, all other Swiss teams will participate in the World Cup on the disastrous circuit in Altenberg and Vogt’s girlfriend Melanie Hasler (25) has also decided to participate.

However, the British team led by pilot Brad Hall (33) boycotted the race. The crew doesn’t think it’s right to take advantage of the Vogt team’s outing. Hall’s pusher Greg Cackett (34), a kind of unofficial athlete spokesperson with his Instagram profile The Breakman, is at the forefront of safety as the organizer of Friday’s crisis meeting.
