Bo Henriksen (49) says goodbye to FC Zürich and joins Bundesliga club Mainz, which is threatened with relegation. A few days ago, the Dane and the FCZ management emphasized that they would certainly work together until the summer. Henriksen’s untimely end comes as a surprise, but it cannot keep pace with other strange managerial departures in recent years.

David Bettoni, FC Sion (May 2023)

Sion, bottom of the Super League, lost 5-0 to Geneva. After the match, defender Reto Ziegler (38) said in an SRF interview that president Christian Constantin (67) fired coach David Bettoni (52) during halftime. “Unfortunately, I think the coach will no longer be with us from tomorrow. The president is angry!” Ziegler said. Constantin denied the incident when Blick asked him about it. Two days later, however, official confirmation followed in one sentence. “FC Sion and David Bettoni ended their collaboration on Monday morning,” the Wallisers write on their website.

Marcel Koller, FC Basel (June 2019)

After a major crisis meeting, FCB officials around club boss Bernhard Burgener (67) and sports director Marco Streller (42) have released coach Marcel Koller (63). That same day he cleans out his locker in the St. Jakob Park and his successor, Patrick Frame (54), is already ready. But just a day later, Burgener changed his mind: he wanted to stay with cup-winning coach Koller despite player protests. Sports director Streller feels betrayed and resigns. Koller only leaves a year later.

Lucien Favre, Gladbach (September 2015)

After six competitive defeats at the start of the season, Lucien Favre (66) wants to say goodbye to Mönchengladbach. But the Borussia board does not want to accept the dismissal of the coach who has been successful for many years. That is why Favre turns to the media with a personal message. “It is time and the best decision for the club and the team to bring about change,” the Vaudois wrote. Sports director Max Eberl (50) tried in vain to convince his coach to stay.

Markusbeginn, Bremen (November 2021)

After a mixed start to the season, coach Markusbeginn (49) is giving up his position as Werder coach. Not because of the sporting results, but because an investigation has been started against him. Initially, a Covid vaccination certificate was allegedly forged and used, among other things, to participate in the Cologne Carnival. At first he denies the accusations, but eventually confesses to the crime. Begin is sentenced by the court to a fine of 36,000 euros. The DFB also fined him 20,000 euros. For Bremen, the end will be a stroke of luck from the start. With successor Ole Werner (35), who is still Werder’s coach today, the club is immediately promoted back to the 1st Bundesliga.

Jean-Louis Gasset, Ivory Coast (January 2024)

Host country Ivory Coast lost 4-0 to outsiders Equatorial Guinea in the final group match of the Africa Cup of Nations. With only three points and a clearly negative goal difference, the elephants are as good as eliminated from the home tournament. The tears are still flowing from the players on the field. Two days later, coach Jean-Louis Gasset (70) was fired.

However, as there were unexpected results in the other groups, Ivory Coast somehow slipped into the round of 16 just hours after the coach was fired as the last of the four best third places in the group. Assistant coach Emerse Faé (40) must therefore intervene. He not only leads the team to the home title with four victories in a row, but is also named the best coach of the tournament.
