What would happen next with coach Bo Henriksen (49) and FC Zürich was a mystery for a long time. Last week the club announced that it would end the season with the Dane on the sidelines. But it doesn’t get that far.
FC Zurich announced on Tuesday morning that the club and coach are parting ways with immediate effect. “Bo Henriksen has asked us to release him from his current contract,” the press release said. The reason: Henriksen will immediately become coach at the German Bundesliga club Mainz. There he meets two players from the Swiss national team, Silvan Widmer (30) and Edimilson Fernandes (27).
The departure comes three days after FCZ’s successful derby against the rankings (1-0). The victory marked the end of a seven-match run of failures under Henriksen.
According to the FCZ, it has been agreed not to make the conditions for dissolution public. Henriksen personally said goodbye to the team and its technical staff in the morning. The residents of Zurich “regret this development, but understand that Bo Henriksen would like to seize the opportunity to work in the Bundesliga.”
Henriksen, who has been with FCZ since October 2022, signed a contract with Mainz until 2026. The club only said goodbye to Jan Siewert (41) on Monday. He only followed Bo Svensson in December – Henriksen was also under discussion in Mainz at the time.
According to information from ‘kickers’, Henriksen brings his compatriot Michael Silberbauer to the technical staff as an assistant. The ex-YB player has been without a club since leaving FC Utrecht in August 2023. Henriksen and Silberbauer have known each other from a short period together at the Danish first division club FC Midtjylland. Silberbauer was Henriksen’s assistant coach for four games at the start of the 2022/2023 season before being fired there at the end of 2022.
Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel describes Henriksen on the club’s homepage as a coach “who, in his career, has repeatedly and under very different circumstances succeeded in building teams and thereby getting them to play a style of football that is equally pragmatic but also courageous .and ultimately successful ».
After Lucien Favre (66, 2007 to Hertha), André Breitenreiter (50, 2022 to Hoffenheim), Marinko Jurendic (46, 2023 to Augsburg) and Heinz Moser (56, 2023 to Augsburg), Henriksen is the fifth FCZ official to leave the club leaves. Bundesliga is being poached. It is not yet known who his successor will be. As the Zurich team announces, Murat Ural (36) and Umberto Romano (51) will take over as assistant coaches of the first team until the end of the season. They are supported by sports director Milos Malenovic.
