Fischer and assistant Albelin receive a contract until 2026 – with a departure clause for the association.
Stephen RothDeputy Head of Ice Hockey

According to information from Blick, the contract with Patrick Fischer (48) and assistant Tommy Albelin (59), which expires after the 2024 World Cup, will soon be extended until 2026. In 2026, the Olympic Games in Italy and the World Cup in Switzerland are two highlights on the program that is of groundbreaking importance for the ice hockey country.

The contract can be terminated in 2024

According to available information, the association has reserved the option to terminate Fischer’s contract after the 2024 World Cup. A buyout option if certain objectives are not achieved. What do these goals look like? This cannot be broken down until the selection for the 2024 World Cup is known. Or to put it another way: if you know how many NHL players are actually on the ice in the Czech Republic (Prague and Ostrava).

‘The hypocritical goal in the quarter-final is off the table’

Patrick Fischer coached the Swiss national team for the first time during the 2016 World Cup in Moscow. Since then, the Zug native has reached the quarter-finals six times in a row and won the second title in 2018 (the 2020 World Cup in Switzerland was canceled due to the pandemic). Most recently, Fischer and his team failed four times in the quarter-finals, against Germany in 2021 and 2023, to the disappointment of the ice hockey nation.

The Nati coach has been under pressure in recent years because he formulated his goals with verve and enthusiasm not only internally but also externally. After losing the quarter-finals in 2021, he raised the bar: “It’s time for a new goal. The semi-final is a fair goal that would make us happy.”

In 2021, Switzerland lost the quarter-finals to Germany 2-3 in a penalty shootout. This season, the national team lost nine of the nine test matches on the Euro Hockey Tour.
