In what had been an extremely disappointing Zurich derby for a long time, applause suddenly burst through the Zurich south corner in the 71st minute. The ovations from the FCZ fans are not for goalscorer Antonio Marchesano (33), but for Fabian Rohner (25), who replaced him.
Until a few days ago, it seemed unthinkable that the homegrown team from Zurich would be used in the 1-0 victory in the rankings. During the winter break, Rohner was unexpectedly thrown out of the professional team. “I was told they were looking for another option for me,” Rohner said. The FCZ wants to sell the winger as quickly as possible. Until a buyer is found, he must remain fit with the U21s.
But change is no problem for Rohner. “I quickly decided that I wanted to make the best of the situation,” he reflects. “I would have been willing to play the entire second half of the season in the U21s.”
Rohner takes the criticism from those responsible at FCZ to heart, goes full throttle with the U21 and refrains from spreading the “kiss my ass” mood. This will be rewarded faster than expected. On the Thursday before the derby, Rohner is allowed to train with the first team for the first time. “If I had behaved differently, I certainly would not have returned so quickly,” says the Zurich resident.
But after just two days of training for the derby, Henriksen Rohner is back in the team selection. “There has never been a personal problem between us. “We always had a very good exchange,” he says of his relationship with his coach.
This is also evident after the derby victory. In the catacombs of Letzigrund, Rohner and Henriksen fall into each other’s arms after the game is over. “A wonderful week with a happy ending,” says Rohner.
