Whiplash and headache give way to goosebumps: Veen back at Oranjehockeysters

“The circle closes,” says ice hockey player Marijn Veen. She gets goosebumps when she talks about her appointment to the Dutch team. That’s exactly what she does in the SCHC sports park, the place where her stormy career came to an abrupt halt.

Three years ago, she backed into another car in the Stichtse Hockey Club parking lot. It inflicted whiplash on the Amsterdam player, which caused discomfort for a long time. The frustration about the recurring complaints was so great that she was no longer sure whether she still wanted to play ice hockey.

She now enjoys playing again, but the defeat at the SCHC at the weekend didn’t change that. “I’m just that 10-year-old girl who’s enjoying hockey again. I leave all these worries behind.”

Marijn Veen returned this weekend to the place where an awkward time began for her:

Marijn Veen back at Orange: “I’m very happy with how I’m doing now”

Veen was destined to win prizes with the Dutch team. On her 2018 Champions Trophy debut, she immediately became the tournament’s top scorer. But after 23 international matches and 11 goals came the accident that threw a spanner in the works.

After a period of discomfort and 10 months without hockey, it soon became apparent that she could still play hockey well. And now confidence has returned, says Veen. “I’m really detached from it and I’m happy with how it’s going now.”

She calls it a “gift” that she can now prove herself to the Dutch again. Veen is happy and proud to rejoin the Orange squad but doesn’t want to blast too high out of the tower. “Of course I’m putting myself under pressure, but I’m taking it and want to keep the game fun.”

Veen reports this week in the training group of national coach Paul van Ass. In addition to Veen, Pien Dicke, Rosa Fernig and Luna Fokke are also new to the selection. Fernig has never played in Orange.

The selection of the reigning world champion Netherlands has the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 as their main goal. The next international matches are scheduled for the professional league tournament in December.
