Family trip to the rugby final in South Africa: Roger Federer with his four children and his mother Lynette.

Roger Federer (42) has retired from tennis for a year and a half, but is busy. Now he will bring the Laver Cup to Berlin in September and on this occasion has given one of his rare interviews to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.

He also talks about his family and private life, for which he now has more time. Federer, recently spotted at Coldplay and Andrea Bocelli concerts, is enjoying life: “It’s great, I’m very happy,” Federer said in the interview.

“They have their own opinions now.”

The transition from an active career to life afterward happened quite “gently” due to his previous injuries and the pandemic. Everything happened more slowly, also due to the pandemic. Now he is often busy with the logistics of his children, which takes up a lot of time. Leo and Lenny are 9 years old, Charlene and Myla are already 14 years old.

Federer talks about the challenges of parenthood and how life is different these days. “This is of course also due to the permanent access to the internet”, everything is immediately available. He tries to be a good father, to know and convey ‘the true values’. “It’s not always easy, especially with 14-year-old girls. They now have their own opinion.”

“I will remain there as a father”

He talks a lot though, they are a close family that spends a lot of time together. But: “We have to let the girls have their own experiences.” Sometimes he feels like a motivational speaker at home. And then think, “Wow, that was a really good speech, Roger!” But five minutes later, none of what he said had happened. Federer takes the teenage fights with humor. “But it’s okay. I’ll stick with it as a father.”

His wonderful career – 20 Grand Slam victories, more than 103 tournament victories in total – is not really a subject for the children; he prefers to talk about experiences while traveling or with people he has met. Only if they actively want to know something will they tell you about it. “No different. That’s not me.”

Federer has not forgotten playing tennis. He recently booked a place with his wife Mirka and played a game. “It was a lot of fun” and his forehand still works well. Furthermore, Federer can mainly be found on the ski slopes. (neo)
