Lucas Ocampos is harassed by a fan during Sevilla’s match against Rayo Vallecano.

Sevilla wins the LaLiga match against Rayo Vallecano 2-1. But the game will not be remembered for its sporting highlights, but rather for the outrage of the fans.

When Sevilla star Lucas Ocampos (29) wanted to take a throw-in in the 33rd minute, a young fan of the home team suddenly stuck his finger in his butt. The Argentinian turns around in surprise and confronts the fan. He then calls the referee and some Rayo players for help.

Players and coaches are shocked

After the match, Ocampos was outraged by the incident and called on the league to take action: “I hope La Liga takes it seriously, just like the issue of racism. I don’t think all people at Rayo are like that, they always treat us with respect, but there is always a fool,” he said in the post-match interview.

Sevilla coach Quique Flores (59) is also shocked: “You have to wonder what goes on in people’s minds, whether they are young or old. I’m very concerned. We have always imagined football as something wild but wonderful. We hope something like this doesn’t happen again.”

Sevilla praises Ocampos’ response

In an official statement, Sevilla wrote about an “obscene and completely inappropriate gesture”. The club from Andalusia also praised their player’s calm reaction. He explained that he had held back because he was the father of two daughters and wanted to show himself as a role model. “So let’s hope they take the reprisals they need to take and that some fool doesn’t tarnish the rest of the fans who were very well behaved.”

How the league will respond to the scandal remains to be seen. There have been repeated racist incidents in Spanish stadiums recently.
