American skier Mikaela Shiffrin (28) was one of the many fall victims in Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy). About a week ago, during her first descent, she crashed into the safety nets almost without braking and stayed there for a long time. She suffered an outer ligament injury in her left knee and later left it unclear when she would return to the World Cup. Now it looks like Shiffrin won’t have to take a break for too long.
On X the ski queen reports back from training for the first time. “A work in progress,” she wrote on a video of herself lifting weights. Her injured left knee is only lightly secured with tape.
The overall World Cup leader wants to get back on the slopes as quickly as possible, because Lara Gut-Behrami (32) is coming dangerously close to her in the overall World Cup. Shiffrin currently leads the standings with 1209 points, but Gut-Behrami is only 95 points behind. And: the Swiss has turned up the heat since Shiffrin’s injury, winning two races, finishing second once and fifth once. The Ticino woman scored important points while Shiffrin had to take a break.
If Shiffrin wants to increase her lead again, she must quickly get back to her usual level. The exceptional athlete made it clear at the start of the season that the crystal balls of the World Cup are very important to her: “The World Cup in general is my top priority,” the top skier said before the winter.
So will Shiffrin be back at the start at the technical races in Soldeu next weekend? American ski boss Patrick Riml leaves this open and says we have to take it day by day. “You often take one step forward and two steps back. We have to be patient,” said Riml. Whether Shiffrin can be patient remains to be seen. (mbi)
