Madness at the Africa Cup: the Ivorian fairytale continues

Big cheers for Seko Fofana. Ivory Coast is in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

After 43 minutes, Ivory Coast’s semi-final dreams suffered a bitter setback. Leverkusen player Odilon Kossounou sees the second yellow card and is sent off, the Ivorians now only have ten men.

More than half an hour of play later, Mali takes advantage of their superiority. They make it 1-0 with a dream goal. But the already declared dead Ivorians did not give up and actually equalized in the 90th minute. The game goes into extra time.

A last-minute goal causes the stadium to explode

That’s where the madness really begins. In the 120th minute everything looked like a penalty shootout when Ivory Coast got one last free kick. Mali cannot completely clear the cross, the Ivorians finish again and the ball somehow ends up in the goal via Oumar Diakité.

In the Bouaké stadium all the dams break, players and fans turn the arena into a madhouse. The joy of goalscorer Dieakité was a little too great; the twenty-year-old took off his jersey in celebration and received the second yellow card of the day. This means he is excluded from the semi-finals.

The Ivorians now face DR Congo with the match taking place next Wednesday. And the football-mad Ivorians can continue to dream of an African coup despite a miserable start to the tournament.
