White instead of red SC Freiburg breaks with tradition on Saturday afternoon and competes in its own stadium with the away shirts – but with good reason.
A player at SC Freiburg suffers from red-green vision. This means that instead of these colors he only sees a uniform brown. Because Stuttgart is participating in a green away match, Freiburg is taking this measure. Christian Streich (58) welcomes the idea. “Not that one passes the ball to the other, because he does not see that it is the opponent,” said the cult coach at the press conference before the match day.
“If we were to play in red, statistically at least two players on the field and 3,000 fans in the stadium would have a problem,” said Freiburg press spokesman Sascha Glunk. “Nine percent of men and 0.8 percent of women” are said to suffer from such a visual impairment. It was not communicated for which player Freiburg would exchange the jersey.
It is not the first time that Freiburg has changed jerseys for this reason. In the 2020/21 season, the Breisgauers wore yellow jerseys in a match against Augsburg. It does not make the current gesture any less sympathetic.
