That’s why the union lasted so long: the long wait for Ajeti’s return

The return of the prodigal son is perfect. Albian Ajeti (26) wants to revive his stalled career in Basel. The transfer back to his home club also got stuck in recent days. The striker completed his medical examination last week. Still, the deal won’t be completed until Thursday.

Ajeti’s fitness level may have contributed to this. At the beginning of December he played his last match for Gaziantep. In total, he played only 55 minutes for the Turkish club in six months. “He is currently not where he sees himself athletically and where we as a club would like to see him,” said sports committee member Ruedi Zbinden (64) in a statement. “We would like to give Albian the opportunity in the coming weeks to carefully work towards the current performance level of the team.”

Ajeti already a topic in the summer of 2023

To get this opportunity, Ajeti will have to accept wage losses. FCB already discussed a return campaign last summer, but the deal failed due to financial circumstances. Instead, the attacker moves from Celtic Glasgow to Gaziantep for a fee of around half a million. He terminated his contract there last week.

Now the third Ajeti engagement in Basel. His first ended in January 2016, when he moved to Augsburg in the Bundesliga at the age of 18. After just six months and a single deployment, he returned to Switzerland. Via St. Gallen, Ajeti eventually ended up back at FCB, where he experienced the most successful period of his career. He scored 34 goals in two years, became top scorer in the 2017/2018 season and celebrated the cup victory with FCB a year later.

43 goals in 96 games

Ajeti, now a national player, is once again taking the plunge abroad. He will move to West Ham in the summer of 2019 for a fee of approximately 11.5 million francs. But again the striker cannot assert himself, also because the Hammers signed Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt for 50 million francs in the same transfer period. Ajeti is on loan at Celtic Glasgow. After a good start, he is only a reservist in Scotland. A new loan to Sturm Graz was also unsuccessful.

Besides a strong year in St. Gallen, Ajeti has only been really successful in his hometown so far. In a total of 96 games for Basel he scored 43 goals. FCB fans will probably have to wait a few more days for the arrival of a new player than for the transfer announcement.
