Goalkeeper Stéphane Charlin (SCL Tigers), defenders Inaki Baragano (Rapperswil-Jona Lakers) and Benoît Jecker (Fribourg-Gottéron) and attackers Tino Kessler (Biel) and Théo Rochette (Lausanne) take part in the four-nation tournament (Beijer Hockey Games), next week in Sweden for the first time in the selection of the Swiss national team.
Compared to the meetings in November and December, Lugano’s Calvin Thürkauf, the National League’s best scorer, is missing from national coach Patrick Fischer’s selection. Masters Genève-Servette also did not nominate a player before the final of the Champions Hockey League (on February 20 in Geneva). However, Denis Malgin and Tyler Moy, the top scorers of the ZSC Lions and Rapperswil-Jona Lakers respectively, are among the Swiss team.
The tournament in Sweden starts for Switzerland on Thursday, February 8 with the match in Karlskoga (6 p.m.) against Olympic champion Finland. This will be followed by the transfer to Karlstad, where the team will play against tournament host country Sweden on Saturday (4 p.m.) and the Czech Republic on Sunday (12 p.m.).
Switzerland is aiming for its first victory this year after losing all six matches against these opponents at the home tournament in Zurich and previously in Finland. “We want to develop further as a team and start the new year successfully. The young players must present themselves and gain important experience against strong opponents,” Fischer formulates the objective for the tournament in Sweden. (SDA)
