South Tyrolean tennis star Jannik Sinner (22) defeated Russian Daniil Medvedev 3-2 in sets on Sunday in the final of the Australia Open to win his first Grand Slam title. South Tyrolean ice hockey coach Stephan Mair (56) defeated Kloten champion Servette 3-2 on Tuesday and won his first match in the National League.
“That’s right,” says Mair, smiling after the successful premiere, “I really didn’t think about that.” Of course, he noted the triumph of the currently most prominent South Tyrol, “but only in passing. Because I was busy with other things.” In preparation for his first week of work in Kloten and the match against Servette. But he still thinks it’s ‘great’ that Sinner is causing so much commotion: ‘I’m really happy with it.’
Mair doesn’t know Sinner personally, ‘but I know his family situation. They are very down-to-earth people and that’s how Jannik Sinner comes across because of who he is.” An annual athletes’ gala takes place in South Tyrol and this creates a bond between athletes in the region, regardless of the sport. “Unfortunately, I have been there in recent years I haven’t been there anymore because I was working abroad,” says Mair.
This is currently also the case with his commitment to EHC Kloten. Naturally, he was happy with the first victory of his time: “I liked the willingness of the boys to fight and block shots.” But Mair also warned: “We should not overestimate this now. There are still many things that we need to coordinate better.”
To make this work, Mair also planned an evening session after the match: “I’m going to watch a large part of the match again so that I can show the team a few videos on Wednesday and we can do the detail work that we did. of the match that started on Monday can continue. We have to become even more compact!” On Friday we go to Bern. If we win again 3-2, Stephan Mair would agree.
