In February 2019, Valérie Grenier (27) fell violently during a downhill training in Are (Sd). In addition to her ankle, she also broke her tibia and fibula. After her comeback a year and a half later, the Canadian decided to turn her back on skiing for the time being. Instead, she focused on giant slalom and super-G – with success. She came closer to the top of the world in the giant slalom and celebrated her first World Cup victory a year ago. A second one has since been added and she has appeared on the podium a total of four times.

This winter, Grenier gave skiing another chance. And celebrated a brilliant comeback. In third place, she reached the podium in the premier league discipline for the first time on Friday in Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy). This confirmed her strong form. In 14 races she finished in the top 14 ten times, but was also eliminated four times. That was also the case on Saturday in the second descent and on Sunday in the Super-G. And she pays dearly for last fall. Shortly before the finish, Grenier merged, flew through the air and landed on the hard track.

Abrupt end to the season

A few hours after the fall, the Canadian Ski Federation announced that she had suffered a shoulder injury. Surgery will probably be required. But then comes the shock for Grenier. A day after her fateful departure, she is examined further and receives a brutal diagnosis. As she writes on Instagram, she not only broke her upper arm, but also tore her cruciate ligament and the medial ligament. Just like five years ago, their season comes to an abrupt end.

On Wednesday, Grenier will have surgery on her arm in Innsbruck (Austria), where she will be taken to the inspections. The knee procedure will “probably be done at home next week.” “I am grateful for the overwhelming support and messages,” she added. She receives many good wishes from the ski circus. “I wish you a successful operation and a safe journey home!” says Mikaela Shiffrin (28).
