Ryan Regez is back – in St. Moritz he made his competitive comeback after more than a year.

It has been over a year since Ryan Regez (30) last participated in a World Cup. In Arosa GR he tore his cruciate ligament during the World Cup in mid-December 2022. Just two days after his teammate Alex Fiva (37) suffered the same fate. Only: Fiva has already arrived in the season, as he impressively demonstrated on Sunday with his second place at the World Cup in St. Moritz GR. Regez, on the other hand, only started the season at the weekend. After more than 13 difficult months of rehabilitation.

Good Olympic start
Five days, five medals for Switzerland

But Regez cannot and does not want to compare himself. Every rehabilitation, every knee is different. And just after the race, the Bernese Oberlander didn’t seem to care that it wasn’t enough for a top position on Sunday. The most important thing is to be able to race shoulder to shoulder with the competition again, without pain. «Today it feels like a victory. I’m just grateful to be here again.” His comeback is an emotional affair, and you can tell that from the 2022 Olympic champion.

Unusually long rehabilitation

Until then, Regez had to show enormous patience. In 2017 he tore his cruciate ligament. At that time he was back on the circuit after nine months. Now the recovery time took a third longer. The rehabilitation did not go as he had imagined, “even though I did everything exactly the same. Same treatment method, same surgeons…’ he says. Watching the races on TV while injured “torn his heart” because he wanted so badly to be on skis. Now the hard work has paid off.

May instead of must

Before the race in the Engadine, the Bernese told SRF that he was starting to win. A bold statement after such a long injury break. Was that really serious? Yes, Regez confirms. “I always start with winning.” But this time it wasn’t a must. “Normally I expect myself to win. But not in this situation.” Returning to the St.Moritz circuit, with a functioning knee and the fire rekindled, was all he wanted. The next World Cups may come.
