The hot phase of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast has been going on since Saturday with the round of 16. Also included Cameroon, which faced Nigeria on Saturday. The Cameroonians made big headlines in 2002 when they wore sleeveless jerseys. The vests brought them luck because they won the title. FIFA didn’t think it was funny at all and subsequently banned sleeveless jerseys for the 2002 World Cup.
1. Samuel Eto’o (42): 18 goals
The Cameroonian played 29 games in 6 Africa Cup of Nations appearances and scored 18 goals. Eto’o won the tournament in 2000 and 2002. And in 2006 and 2008 he was the record scorer with five goals each.
2. Laurent Pokou († 2016): 14 goals
The striker from Ivory Coast was also twice top scorer at the Africa Cup of Nations (1968 and 1970). In 1970 he scored five goals in the match against Ethiopia alone, including a hat-trick in 16 minutes.
3. Rashidi Yekini († 2012): 13 goals
In 1997/98, the Nigerian played one season for FCZ and scored
14 goals. He was also accurate in the national team. In 1992 and 1994 he was top scorer in the Africa Cup of Nations.
4. Hassan El-Shazly († 2015): 12 goals
What a quota! The Egyptian scored an average of 1.5 goals per match at the Africa Cup of Nations. While that is still a record to this day, he was never able to win the title. El-Shazly died at the age of 71.
5. Didier Drogba (45): 11 goals
Even though the man from Ivory Coast appears “only” in fifth place, he is one of the greatest African footballers of all time. Patrick Mboma (Kam) and Hossam Hassan (Ag) also scored 11 goals.
Mostly kicks Amadou Haidara for RB Leipzig, but he currently plays for Mali in the Africa Cup of Nations. The midfielder can have a lot to celebrate in the coming days. On Tuesday, Haidara and his team will face Burkina Faso in the round of 16, and on Wednesday he will celebrate 26th birthday.
To date, no player has played more matches at the Africa Cup of Nations Rigobert song. The Cameroonian made 36 appearances in eight participations. He was only 19 on his debut and 33 on his last match. He has been national coach of Cameroon since 2022.
