The first descent in Cortina d’Ampezzo (It) is characterized by many waterfalls. Twelve drivers were unable to finish the race, a third of whom came from Switzerland.

Corinne Suter (29) was hit hardest, but did not fall. The woman from Schwyz, who became world champion in Cortina in 2021, has to swing from the top part of the track after a jump – and screams in pain. Then on Friday evening the terrible diagnosis: tear of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee. The meniscus was also injured.

“Corinne is having surgery on Saturday. If healing goes according to plan, she will be able to race normally again next winter,” said team doctor Walter O. Frey.

Shortly after the injury was announced, Suter made an Instagram post of his own. “This hurts,” the athlete wrote, captioning her post with a broken heart. She also provides two photos, including one of her lying in a hospital bed.

Head coach suspected evil

Beat Tschuor, head coach of the Swiss women, told Blick on Friday afternoon: “She was taken by helicopter to the Hirslanden Clinic in Zurich and is being examined there.” But he didn’t suspect anything good either: “It’s not harmless. If she reacts like that, something must have happened.”

Shortly before, American superstar Mikaela Shiffrin (28) flew from exactly the same place as Suter. However, the American superstar got off lightly; her cruciate and medial ligaments are intact.

Gisin issues a forfeit

In addition to Priska Nufer (31) and Stephanie Jenal (25), Michelle Gisin also falls. The 30-year-old gave the first out with her arm raised, but apparently injured herself so badly that she had to miss the remaining races in the Dolomites. Tschuor: “It appears she has bruises on the edges of her shoes, but the investigation is still ongoing.”

The spot where Gisin crashed will be adjusted for Saturday’s race, says Tschuor: “The entrance to the delta is being weakened. It’s an unusual curve because the athletes have to change their momentum in the air.”

Tschuor welcomes Gut-Behrami’s criticism

For Lara Gut-Behrami (32), who was only defeated by Austrian Stephanie Venier (30), there are several reasons that are partly responsible for the Autumn Festival. For example, the athletes themselves: “If you have two days off, you go and train somewhere or test your skis and neglect recovery.” You should also take some time and not try to perfect everything.

“I think it’s good that she has spoken out in this direction,” says Tschuor about the criticism of the Super-G Olympic champion. “She is a very experienced athlete who handles it very well.” It is actually an aspect and especially young drivers need to learn this. “And it’s nice when an athlete like Lara comments on it.”
