Shocking moment during the first women’s descent in Cortina d’Ampezzo (It). Mikaela Shiffrin (28) starts the race with starting number 8. It will be a short performance by the American.
After 17 seconds of riding, she lost her direction over the jump. When landing, it is pulled out and flies uncontrollably into the safety nets. The impact is quite violent. The spectators are breathtaking. Not even the overall World Cup leader, many people may think so. We wait anxiously for the next few minutes. Because Shiffrin lays there for what feels like an eternity.
After about five minutes you can breathe calmly. Shiffrin gets up and doesn’t have to be taken down the slopes in the rescue sled. But she does not put weight on her left leg, but uses her ski poles as crutches. Unfortunately, that doesn’t look good at all. As soon as she leaves the runway, the helicopter is called to fly her to the hospital for clearance. This causes the race to be interrupted for a longer period of time.
Just two weeks ago, Shiffrin had to watch her friend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (31) fall heavily in Wengen BE. Now it’s happening to her too. Nearly an hour later, the U.S. Ski Team wrote to X that Shiffrin had contacted the team chat. She explains everything clearly. A short time later there is more news. As the team tells the American, she was examined in the hospital. The initial findings: The anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments of the left knee appear intact. Further information will follow at a later date.
Once the race continues, Swiss ski fans will find themselves on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Immediately after Shiffrin, Lara Gut-Behrami (32) shows a strong ride. Although she also does not get through it without problems, she takes the lead.
And shortly afterwards she had to watch as teammate Corinne Suter (29) stopped her journey in pain. She has problems in the same place as Shiffrin; when she lands, she is apparently hit in the knee. The screams heard from Suter are piercing. It doesn’t look good for her either. She no longer has any weight on her leg and is first taken off the route on a quad bike before being taken to hospital by helicopter.
Alpine director Hans Flatscher (51) tells Blick: “If Corinne cannot put weight on her leg, then something bad has probably happened. She is not one to give up.” Swiss-Ski has its own doctor in Cortina who is now examining her. Later on Friday afternoon, Suter headed to Zurich.
In addition to Shiffrin and Suter, other athletes did not reach the finish line. Including Priska Nufer (31), Michelle Gisin (30) and Stephanie Jenal (25) other Swiss women. Gisin in particular is hit quite hard. She flies into the safety net with full force, but fortunately gives the all-clear after a few seconds and gets back up.
Good luck to Jenal. Her legs are torn apart after a cut. She can avoid a fall and escapes without fear. (beer)
