Aston Villa defeated Sunderland 7-0 away from home in the League Cup on Wednesday – partly thanks to a goal from Swiss international Alisha Lehmann (25). Yet the Villa women must fear for victory. The English Football Association has launched an investigation, which could lead to a forfeit defeat despite the goal celebration.
The second Swiss woman at Aston Villa, Noëlle Maritz (28), was responsible for this. The defender, who moved from Arsenal to Birmingham this winter, is sent off at half-time.
The problem: she is not eligible to play in the League Cup because she has already made three appearances for the Gunners in the competition.
It’s just a shame no one at Villa had this on their radar. The club states that it was an “administrative error”. But that won’t change much. According to the rules, bets without permission to play result in defeat at the green table. (sbe)
