Italian speed queen Sofia Goggia in conversation with Blick. She is looking forward to her home races in Cortina, but still has a lot of work to do mentally.

View: Sofia Goggia, do you like watching men’s racing?
Sofia Goggia: Yes very much. Especially giant slalom, super-G and downhill.

Who inspires you?
Marco Odermatt. It’s incredible what he shows. But I’m more the Manuel Feller type. He has his own style. When Feller is at the start, you never know what will follow – I’m like that too.

You fall, get up and win the next day. This was the case last winter in St. Moritz and recently also in Zauchensee. How do you do that?
Intensity and fire – that’s me. Sometimes I make mistakes. But I always have the will to get through bad things. At the age of 31, I have the backpack I need for this.

They are considered very brave, but are also sensitive.
My driving style reflects my mood. When I’m calm and happy, I always drive fast. But if there’s something unresolved inside me, my skis sense it. So I better stay quiet in Cortina for the next three days.

During the first Cortina training you lost 2.52 seconds, the second training was cancelled. A problem?
I have a lot of mental work ahead of me and I hope to find the key to this slope.

1st place in the Downhill World Cup, 4th place in the Super-G World Cup: Are you satisfied?
I’m not using 100 percent of my potential and I’m not dominating like I did last season. But one of my strengths is that I can pick up speed in the corners.

You’re not as wild as you used to be, are you?
Technically I am more stable than last year. That was my wish and my goal before the season. The key to that was the giant slalom – I worked hard in this discipline. The bends you drive there are the basis of everything.

What do the races in Cortina mean to you?
When I think of Cortina, the first thing that comes to mind is: I am sitting on the old double chairlift before the tour. The first orange rays of sunlight appear on the horizon. A beautiful moment – like a poem.

The Olympic Games will take place here in 2026. Her thoughts?
This will be the apotheosis of skiing.

So something heavenly?
Precisely. It’s still two years away, which isn’t long, but a lot can still happen.

What would be more important to you: a 2025 World Cup title in Saalbach or Olympic gold in Cortina?
I’m already an Olympic champion, but not a world champion yet – I’ve only won silver and bronze. I miss that title, I’m going after it, but…

Yes?
Nothing compares to an Olympic gold medal.

Change the subject. Aleksander Aamodt Kilde not only dislocated his shoulder when he fell on the Lauberhorn, but also suffered a deep cut in his leg. Do we need cut-resistant suits at the World Cup?
Yes, that would improve our safety. I think this should be mandatory.

Only then are equal opportunities guaranteed, because these colors are slower.
The FIS probably hasn’t found a good way to introduce them to the World Cup yet. Otherwise it would have already been done.

In Zauchensee you cried after your victory downhill. “But not for joy,” you said. This caused confusion.
Zauchensee was a cursed place for me; I had fallen there before. Other things also emerged. It’s like this: most people watch my races, they see me from start to finish. But you don’t know what it looks like inside me.
