Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 2) is again in the final at the Australian Open. The defending champion from Belarus beat US Open winner Coco Gauff (WTA 4) 7:6 (7:2), 6:4.
Coco Gauff fouled out in a rematch of last year’s US Open final to prevent Sabalenka’s 13th consecutive victory in Melbourne. In contrast to her first Grand Slam tournament victory last fall in New York, the number 4 seed American can no longer turn the tide after losing the first round.
Sabalenka had a lot of trouble in the opening set when Gauff served to win the set at 6:5 and led 30:0. But then the Belarusian, who was also unusually error-prone, managed to turn things around. After the re-break, she led 4-0 in the tiebreak – thus laying the foundation for successful revenge.
Instead of Gauff, Sabalenka will be in a major final for the third time in her career on Saturday. The number 2 in the world, who had to admit defeat to the Kazakh Jelena Rybakina in the final in Brisbane this year, will have to deal with an outsider. China’s Zheng Qinwen (WTA 15) won the second semi-final against Ukrainian qualifier Dajana Jastremska (WTA 93) 6:4, 6:4. It is the first final at a Grand Slam tournament for the 21-year-old right-hander, who has won two WTA tournaments so far. (SDA/dti)
