“I am thinking about retirement and will not be available for the Olympic Games.” A column by Nick Kyrgios (28) appeared with this title in the Australian daily newspaper ‘The Age’.

The Olympic Games in Paris are scheduled for this summer (July 26 to August 11). But anyone who thinks that Kyrgios will step down in the summer at the latest is wrong. Kyrgios’ thoughts of resigning have nothing to do with his decision not to participate in the Olympics.

Immediate dismissal? “Do not spread waste”

Rather, they stem from injury problems that Kyrgios has faced over the past year. First it was a knee injury and now a torn ligament in the wrist that slowed the 2022 Wimbledon finalist. In December, he openly flirted with the end of his career in a podcast with British author Jah Shetty. “If it were up to me, I honestly wouldn’t want to play anymore,” he said at the time.

Kyrgios now writes that he recently sat down with his agent and discussed his future. “The reality is that part of me knows my time in the sport may be over.” Kyrgios already has a plan for what his tennis career could look like: “I could travel the world and make really good money commentating on sports.”

The dismissal plan therefore appears to be in effect. However, Kyrgios is angry that some media subsequently report that his career is over. ‘Be careful… I’m not resigning. Please stop spreading garbage. I’ll be right back.”

Unfinished business with the Australian Olympic Committee

Kyrgios has in mind to be fit again for Wimbledon (July 1 to 14) and the US Open (August 26 to September 8). “But I can guarantee one thing: I will not make myself available for the Olympic Games,” said the Australian. For the simple reason that the Australian committee passed him over for the Rio Games in 2016. This was “a scandal”. He just couldn’t forget that.

Yet the end of the 28-year-old’s career is not far away. «Sports is entertainment and I think I’m putting on a show. But at some point the curtain has to close.”
