In general, people like to keep a low profile when it comes to the absence of star players. When Leonardo Genoni suddenly disappears from the scene, it is no different. The seven-time champion goalkeeper was last in the EVZ goal against the SCRJ Lakers on January 2 – including the shutout.
In the six games since then, Genoni has been listed as ill on the scoresheet. No further information is available on this, apart from the note on the club website that his condition will be reassessed on a day-to-day basis. A few days have passed now.
The good news: The 36-year-old completed full on-ice training with the team on Tuesday. So Genoni seems to be on the way back? Zug’s coach Dan Tangnes (44) also prefers to keep a low profile in this personnel matter. “If he goes well all week, we hope he can play a match next weekend,” says the Norwegian.
Genoni’s long absence is so noticeable because the veteran has almost never been out longer in his career. The EVZ had to do without him for an extended period of time in the goalkeeper’s debut season in Zug at the end of autumn 2019. At that time, he missed five games during his three-week injury break due to adductor problems. Genoni was only absent from the HCD for a longer period of time. In October 2013, he suffered an ankle injury and had to sit out two months. The goalkeeper was unavailable for eighteen games.
He has currently missed six games at EVZ. As a result, his replacement Luca Hollenstein made so many consecutive appearances in the National League for the first time in his career. The 23-year-old is therefore on his way to his season with the most games to date.
Hollenstein currently has 18 appearances, Genoni 21. The youngster and the veteran are pretty much on par with their stats: Hollenstein has a goals average of 2.04, Genoni 2.08. Hollenstein’s catch rate is 92.66 percent, Genoni’s is 92.68 percent. In his last year at EV Zug – Hollenstein moves to HC Davos – he proves his great potential.
