Dajana Jastremska (23) beat 19-year-old Czech Linda Noskova 6:3, 6:4 to become the first qualifier in 46 years to reach the semi-finals in Melbourne.
Jastremska converted her first match point after 1:19 hours on Rod Laver Arena to achieve the biggest success of her career to date.
In the semi-finals on Thursday, Jastremska will face Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya or China’s Zheng Qinwen. Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and US Open champion Coco Gauff will compete in the other semi-final.
«It’s fun to make history. I wasn’t even born in 1978,” Jastremska said after her confident performance. “I just did my best. You can only achieve something in life by fighting.” (SDA/men)
