Petra Vlhova faces a long rehabilitation.

Petra Vlhova (28) was on the podium seven times this winter, three times as winner and second and once as third. In the overall World Cup and in the slalom rankings, she was considered the toughest competitor of the American high flyer Mikaela Shiffrin (28). But now their season is over prematurely. Of all places, the Slovakian fell and was seriously injured during her giant slalom Jasna.

The bitter diagnosis: cruciate ligament tear in the right knee. She will not return to skiing this season. ‘It’s a big loss. We will miss her,” said Mikaela Shiffrin after Vlhova’s fall.

There will be an operation soon

Two days after the fatal incident, there is an update from Vlhova. As her team reports, she relies on Swiss expertise for the treatment. After weighing all options, she traveled to Valais for further research. Dr. Olivier Siegrist has a lot of experience with such injuries and has come to the conclusion that surgery is the best solution for Vlhova. However, this will only happen in a few days, once the swelling in the knee has decreased and surgery is possible.

Until then, Vlhova will stay in her home country. “She is already back home,” says her trainer Mauro Pini. “Everyone in the team, including Petra, is positive and ready for this journey full of new experiences.” Vlhova can also count on the support of her boyfriend. Michal Kyselica, with whom she has been together since the summer of 2019, writes about a photo shared on Instagram: “The journey to come back stronger has only just begun.” (beer)
