Guinea is celebrating its first African Cup victory this year, but is mourning the loss of six fans.

Thanks to Friday’s 1-0 win over Gambia, Guinea is on the verge of reaching the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations for the third time in a row. The team’s success with YB defender Mohamed Ali Camara (26) causes ecstasy at home – but also with fatal consequences.

As the Guinean Football Federation (Feguifoot) confirmed to BBC Sport Africa, six people were killed during victory celebrations in the capital Conakry. Those responsible therefore call for successes to be celebrated ‘in an appropriate manner’.

Amadou Makadji, media spokesperson for the association, calls on people not to endanger themselves: “The purpose of football is to bring joy and not to make families mourn.” We are aware that Guinea is an extremely football-mad country, but we still urge people to take care of themselves while celebrating. “We don’t want to mourn any deaths.”

Ex-Sion player: “Keep calm!”

Pascal Feindouno, 69-time former international and three-time Africa Cup participant with Guinea, also wants his compatriots to behave decently. “We are doing well at the moment, so support the country. But don’t do anything that will kill yourself or others. Stay calm,” the former professionals from Sion and Lausanne (10 and 18 appearances) told the BBC.

Guinea continues on Tuesday evening against group favorites Senegal. In the match between the top duo from Group C, a draw is enough for the world number 80 to advance. (ch)
