The YB fan curve has been blocked by the licensing authorities for the match against GC. This has been known since October. And that also led to the declaration of the unified fan curves of the Super League for a joint demo in Bern. Just a bluff, as it turns out. It would have been funny if fans from St. Gallen and Lucerne or Basel and FCZ had held hands and demonstrated against the evil politicians.
So there is absolutely nothing worth sharing from Bern City before the first match of the second half of the season. But during the match!
In the first half everything is as it should be. Or almost. The eastern bend is deserted. The mood was bad and adapted to the bitter cold. YB kicks accordingly. Uninspired. Out of ideas. But GC doesn’t get any support either. The Hoppers annex is voluntarily not located in the guest sector. And David von Ballmoos, the new number one in the YB goal, has to show why she is where she is: an excellent save against Momoh.
After the break everything is different. The GC fans register with a pyro-orgy. Also the Bern Ultras. Not in the east bend, but in sector C16, northeast! This way you can avoid fines and turn a blind eye to politicians.
But the sudden atmosphere in the stadium is inspiring for the teams! Only no goals are scored. The two goalkeepers, including Justin Hammel of the rankings, are holding up very well. Until Donat Rrudhani scores the first goal of 2024. Romand’s first Super League goal in the 33rd match! So far, he has scored just once for YB in the Conference League and Cup qualifiers last season.
Coach Raphael Wicky also confirms that Rrudhani is highly appreciated and popular in the team. All players cheer along with the native Kosovar, who hides his face after the goal and suppresses a tear. “It made me a little emotional,” he says. “I had to wait a long time for it.”
The emotional situation in GC is different. The game was good after preparations were disrupted by the change of ownership. “President Matt Jackson was a president with incredible expertise. He pulled the cart with Bernt Haas and me. Now he’s gone. And Theo Corbeanu, who would have played from the start,” reveals coach Bruno Berner. “So the change already had an impact. But the team continued to work with concentration. I think you saw that reflected in our performance.”
Epilogue: YB announced a new arrival on Saturday. Norwegian U21 national striker Joel Mvuka (1.78 m) comes from Ligue 1 club Lorient. He is rented out with an option to purchase until the end of the season. Mvuka won the championship with Bodö/Glimt last season and played seven times for Lorient. “He is fast and difficult,” says sports director Steve von Bergen. So it looks more like Meschack Elia’s profile. With a second type of player, YB gets more variety and at the same time anticipates the departure of the player of the year.
