YB striker is on the verge of a comeback: is he on his way to his first European championship?

Wind at the back for YB striker Cedric Itten (27) on his way to a possible career highlight! At the start of the European Championship year he is even on his way ahead of schedule. He quickly battled back from his foot injury and is set to make his comeback for YB’s Super League restart against the rankings (Saturday, 6pm).

Itten beams in the Blick interview: “I’m back in top form. It was a torn ligament in the foot and two partial tears in the bone, so it was a long-term injury. You actually expect eight weeks. I was six and a half weeks old when I started again and everything was fine again. After his setback in November, he paid particular attention to first being disciplined for the upcoming injury break and only then starting again – but even more so, as it now appears.

European Championships and World Cup? Just missed it until now

Itten scored four goals in twelve league games in the preliminary round. On average, the Basel player in the YB uniform scores every 124 minutes. This makes him almost as efficient as his teammate Nsame, who, together with FCZ-Okita, is the new competition top scorer after the transfer of Servette striker Bedia to Union Berlin. The Cameroonian, who has nine goals to his name, scores every 105 minutes (see graph).

Will Itten overtake his teammate at the top of the team in the second half of the season? The 1.90 meter tall man has his sights set on participating in a major tournament with the national team. After his Nati debut in November 2019, he was missing from the squad for the European Championship in the summer of 2021 after a complicated first year abroad with Glasgow Rangers. Despite competition training with YB, this was also not taken into account at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

His Scottish friends are already euphoric

It would be all the more special for Itten to be in Germany in the summer, also because of the opponents. The national team will face both the host nation, where Itten played for Greuther Fürth in the Bundesliga for six months, and the home ground of Glasgow Rangers. After the draw he received a lot of messages: “There were a lot of messages, especially from Scotland. Many friends and former teammates wrote to me. Others asked me about tickets.”

Before Itten can hand out EM tickets, he has to push for them himself. If he stays on the fast track like he did after his injury, there’s a good chance that happens.
