Last Saturday, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (31) ensured that the finish area in Wengen BE was completely quiet from one second to the next. The Norwegian had a heavy crash in the finish S. And despite the early end of the season he escaped with a black eye. Diagnosis: Dislocated shoulder and a deep cut in the leg.

After reporting to Bern’s Inselspital on Sunday with a photo from his bed, Kilde is now speaking for the first time about his terrible fall. “I have never experienced so much pain,” he says in an interview with “Viaplay”, which he gives from his hospital bed. He only has vague memories of the fall itself.

Severe pain in the shoulder

«I remember losing control in the penultimate corner. “I fall and have extreme pain in my shoulder,” he says, describing the fateful moment. After that, everything practically disappeared. “All I could think about was my shoulder and how much it hurt.”

“At this point I have put aside the idea of a quick comeback.”Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, ski expert

But that wasn’t the only thing he injured. “I got caught in the safety net, cut my leg and lost a lot of blood,” he says. “The cut is deep, almost to the bone.” The nerves were also seriously affected. Fortunately for Kilde, the motor nerves are still intact. However, he knows that repairing this damage will take some time. “At this point, I’ve put aside the idea of a quick comeback,” he says.

“I take it day by day”

He describes the way back as a challenge. “But I am a positive boy and I like challenges.” He is aware of the seriousness of the situation, but still takes it calmly. “I take it day by day,” says Kilde. “At the moment everything is so uncertain that it is too early to say more.”

On the path ahead, he can count on the support of his girlfriend Mikalea Shiffrin (28). The American had skipped the races in Zauchensee (Austria) and traveled straight to Bern after his fall. “It was absolutely incredible,” Kilde recalls, recalling that she and her family were there when he woke up that night in the hospital. The fact that he was able to spend the first 24 hours with her “was incredibly good for me.”
