After the goalkeeper’s decision at YB: Von Ballmoos receives support from Racioppi

One man’s flesh is another man’s suffering. YB goalkeeper David von Ballmoos (29) starts the new year with “huge expectations”, as he said shortly before the season opener against GC (Saturday, 6 p.m.). Before the first match he had already won a duel, namely the YB goal against Anthony Racioppi, who was four years younger. Coach Raphael Wicky decided surprisingly quickly on his number one at the start of training in early January.

For von Ballmoos, the situation was reversed in the fall

Now Von Ballmoos is talking about regaining the number one spot in the YB goal. He reveals that he and competitor Racioppi discussed it after the decision. Von Ballmoos: “I have supported him for a long time and have always been there for him. We spoke and he promised me the same. He said that I had always been there for him and that he was now trying to support me in exactly the same way.”

Von Ballmoos fought back from a serious injury in the preliminary round. This time it was the knee. Various shoulder injuries repeatedly presented the five-time Swiss champion with tough tests. After a successful rehabilitation, he had to learn in the fall to mainly support Racioppi, despite a few playing opportunities. Now the roles have been reversed again.

“He’s a real machine”

Coach Raphael Wicky speaks of a “luxury situation” with the YB goal and mentions that both goalkeepers have already tasted life in the national team. About the relegated Racioppi, he says: “He has accepted this situation, pushes, trains, knows in which points we want him to develop further. I have confidence in both goalkeepers.”

He told them both exactly what Von Ballmoos spoke for and against Racioppi, but Wicky would not comment publicly on the exact reasons. It is known that in addition to beautiful parades in the fall, Racioppi also regularly shot money.

Now the 1.92 meter tall man from Ballmoos is firmly in the YB goal again. A teammate knows all too well what awaits the opponent’s attackers. Cedric Itten, back from a foot injury, played against von Ballmoos four times before his YB days as a player for Basel and St. Gallen and scored two goals. “It’s a real machine, covers a lot of the target and is very powerful.” Off the field they are good friends. Itten laughs and says, “But he’s not pleasant on the field.”
