What a fantastic day for Dabu (42) from Dabu Fantastic! Because the dialect musician had proven himself last weekend in Adelboden as part of the Sunrise “Vogellisi” challenge, the Wengen fan was able to visit the classic Lauberhorn descent for the first time in his life. “A dream came true!”, says the Zurich resident enthusiastically about the past weekend.
Even as a little boy, Dabu and his family came to the Wengenschnee ski camp in Wengen during their sports holidays. “Since then, it has been my greatest desire to immerse myself in the ski racing cosmos of the Lauberhorn,” he says.
Thanks to Sunrise Moments (see box), this dream has now become reality – and how: the musician in the Bernese Oberland could hardly have had it better. Beautiful weather, great atmosphere – and the Swiss victory thanks to an excellent Marco Odermatt (26).
Dabu’s long Lauberhorn day started with breakfast at the hotel, where he met the first familiar face. “I was able to exchange a few words with SRF co-commentator Beat Feuz,” said the musician. “That was cool.” And then we immediately continued with leading company. Dabu completed the route inspection together with former skier Mauro Caviezel (35). “It was impressive to experience that. What happens in the athletes’ waiting area or when you drive through the Starthüsli,” he says.
He actually knows the route from his numerous stays at the Wengen ski camp. “But of course not if it is prepared and disconnected. That was special. And I also had the benefit of Mauro’s insider knowledge. A real experience!”
The dialect star then watched the race in the Sunrise Loube on Hundschopf. Dabu enthusiastically says that he is extremely grateful to have been given this opportunity. “You have the best view there and you are very close to the athletes. You can literally hear them working!” However, the joy was marred by the several falls. “Every time the audience was completely silent. The audience sympathized with it, which I really enjoyed.”
After starting number 35, Dabu then followed the race a little further and ultimately stayed in the finish area. He met many people along the tracks, such as OK President Urs Näpflin and the numerous helpers who put in a huge amount of work for this race.
And Dabu also got into conversation with the big winner Marco Odermatt. Odi met Dabu several times: “On Friday evening I saw him still extremely tense. “You felt that the big race was still ahead of him,” he says. On Saturday evening, musician Marco Odermatt met in the Sunrise Lounge for a meet & greet. After the race it was the place to be for all athletes. Dabu: “It was nice to see Odi celebrating with Cyprien Sarrazin, with whom he had such an exciting duel on the track hours earlier.”
Dabu’s conclusion about his first Lauberhorn weekend: “Thank you Wengen – and Sunrise. It’s nice to hear gsy!”
